Anonymize text directly in your browser

The anonymize.today Chrome Extension lets you analyze and anonymize text on any webpage. Right-click to anonymize selected text or use the extension popup for more options.


Installation

From Chrome Web Store

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store
  2. Search for "anonymize.today"
  3. Click Add to Chrome
  4. Confirm by clicking Add Extension
  5. The extension icon appears in your toolbar

Using the Extension

Context Menu (Right-Click)

The fastest way to anonymize text:

  1. Select text on any webpage
  2. Right-click to open the context menu
  3. Click Anonymize with anonymize.today
  4. Anonymized text is copied to your clipboard

Quick Anonymize

Select text → Right-click → Anonymize → Paste anywhere

For more control, use the extension popup:

  1. Click the anonymize.today icon in your toolbar
  2. Paste or type text in the input area
  3. Choose a preset or select entity types
  4. Click Analyze to detect PII
  5. Review and select entities to anonymize
  6. Click Anonymize
  7. Copy the result or send it back to the page

Keyboard Shortcut

Open the extension popup quickly:

  • Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+A
  • macOS: Cmd+Shift+A

Features

One-Click Anonymize

Right-click any selected text to instantly anonymize it using your default preset.

Clipboard Integration

Anonymized text is automatically copied to your clipboard, ready to paste anywhere.

Preset Sync

Your presets sync from your anonymize.today account. Change your default preset in extension settings.


Signing In

  1. Click the extension icon
  2. Click Sign In
  3. You'll be redirected to anonymize.today
  4. Sign in with your account (including 2FA if enabled)
  5. Return to the browser - you're signed in

Once signed in:

  • Your presets are available in the extension
  • Operations use tokens from your account
  • Your session persists for 30 days

Extension Settings

Access settings by clicking the gear icon in the popup:

Default Preset

Choose which preset is used for right-click anonymization:

  1. Open extension settings
  2. Under "Default Preset," select your preferred preset
  3. This preset is used for context menu anonymization

Default Method

Choose the default anonymization method:

  • Replace - Replace with placeholders like [PERSON]
  • Mask - Partially mask characters
  • Redact - Remove completely

Notifications

Toggle browser notifications for:

  • Successful anonymization
  • Low token balance warnings

Privacy & Permissions

Permissions Used

  • contextMenus - Add right-click menu item
  • storage - Save your preferences locally
  • clipboardWrite - Copy anonymized text to clipboard
  • activeTab - Read selected text on the current page

Data Handling

The extension:

  • Only processes text you explicitly select or paste
  • Never reads pages automatically or in the background
  • Sends only selected text to anonymize.today for processing
  • Does not collect browsing history or page content

Troubleshooting

Context menu not appearing

  1. Make sure you have text selected
  2. Try refreshing the page
  3. Check that the extension is enabled
  4. Reinstall the extension if needed

Clipboard not working

  • Check that you've granted clipboard permission
  • Some websites block clipboard access - try pasting manually

Not signed in after browser restart

  • Click the extension icon and check sign-in status
  • Sign in again if needed
  • Ensure cookies aren't being cleared on exit

Uninstalling

  1. Right-click the extension icon in the toolbar
  2. Select Remove from Chrome
  3. Confirm removal

Or visit chrome://extensions and click Remove on anonymize.today.
