Anonymize text directly in Microsoft Office
The anonymize.today Office Add-in brings PII detection and anonymization directly into Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Anonymize text without leaving your document.

Requirements
- Microsoft 365: Desktop or web versions
- Office 2019+: Desktop versions for Windows/macOS
- Internet connection: Required for PII detection
Installation
From Microsoft AppSource
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
- Go to Insert → Get Add-ins (or Home → Add-ins)
- Search for "anonymize.today"
- Click Add to install
- The add-in appears in your ribbon
Manual Installation (Admin)
For organization-wide deployment:
- Download the manifest from your anonymize.today account
- Deploy via Microsoft 365 Admin Center
- Assign to users or groups
Note
The add-in is available in 11 languages and automatically uses your Office language settings.
Using the Add-in
Opening the Add-in
- Click the anonymize.today button in your ribbon
- A panel opens on the right side of your document
- Sign in with your anonymize.today account
Analyzing Text
- Select the text you want to analyze (or select all)
- Choose a preset or select entity types
- Click Analyze
- Detected entities are highlighted in the panel
Anonymizing Text
- Review the detected entities
- Select/deselect entities as needed
- Choose the anonymization method (replace, mask, etc.)
- Click Apply
- Your document is updated with anonymized text
Tip
Use Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z) to undo changes if needed. The add-in modifies your document directly.

Signing In
- Open the add-in panel
- Click Sign In
- A browser window opens
- Sign in with your anonymize.today account
- Complete 2FA if enabled
- Return to Office - you're signed in
Your session persists across Office apps and restarts for up to 30 days.
Using Presets
Your presets sync automatically from your anonymize.today account:
- Select a preset from the dropdown
- Entity types are automatically selected
- Create new presets in the web app or Settings

Troubleshooting
Add-in doesn't appear in ribbon
- Check that the add-in is installed (Insert → Get Add-ins → My Add-ins)
- Restart Office
- Clear Office cache and try again
Can't sign in
- Check your internet connection
- Disable any VPN temporarily
- Clear browser cookies and try again
- Try incognito/private browsing for the sign-in
Analysis not working
- Ensure you have text selected
- Check your token balance
- Try signing out and back in
Changes not applying
- Make sure you clicked "Apply" after selecting entities
- Check if document is in read-only mode
- Try selecting a smaller text range
Uninstalling
- Go to Insert → Get Add-ins → My Add-ins
- Find anonymize.today in the list
- Click the three dots menu
- Select Remove
